January 27, 2014 – The UW Hockey club shared a home and home series with No.6 Metro State of Denver over this past weekend. Wyoming upset Metro State Friday night in Laramie 2-1, and suffered a tough loss Saturday night in Denver 6-5.
The Cowboys trailed Metro 1-0 for most of the game until Sam Dielwart (Calgary, Alberta) found the back of the net with 4 minutes left in the third period. The last minutes of the period brought out a tremendous level of play from both teams making this one hell of a game to watch. With only 34 seconds left to play, Wyoming’s Tyson Loundagin (Casper, Wyo.) snuck one behind the Metro tender giving the Cowboys the lead 2-1. Metro would try to tie up the game in the last few seconds but came up short, giving Wyoming the victory over No.6 Metro State.
Saturday night’s game was held at Metro’s barn in Denver, Colo. The Cowboys were determined to capture another win against a higher ranked team like the night before. After the first period, Wyoming lead Metro 2-1 but was unable to keep the lead for long. During the second period, Metro out away a few goals while Wyoming only managed to get one goal, ending the period 5-3. The third period came down to the final second making the game, yet again, a thriller to watch. The Cowboys were able to get within one goal of Metro with a 6-5 game, but were unable to capitalize with the extra attacker from pulling the goaltender. Beau Jackson (Calgary, Alberta) had a standout performance Saturday night, scoring a hat trick for the Cowboys. Goals also from Dielwart and Loundagin.
The Cowboys (13-11) will travel down to Grand Junction, Colo. for a small Round Robin style tournament hosted by Colorado Mesa University. Visiting teams will be Colorado Mesa, New Mexico, Western State, and Wyoming.
